Description du produit

Expert testimony relying on scientific and other specialized evidence has come under increased scrutiny by the legal system. A trilogy of recent U. S. Supreme Court cases has assigned judges the task of assessing the relevance and reliability of proposed expert testimony. In conjunction with the Federal judiciary, the American Association for the Advancement of Science has initiated a project to provide judges indicating a need with their own expert. This concern with the proper interpretation of scientific evidence, especially that of a proabilistic nature, has also occurred in England, Australia and in several European countries. Statistical Science in the Courtroom is a collection of articles written by statisticians and legal scholars who have been concerned with problems arising in the use of statistical evidence. A number of articles describe DNA evidence and the difficulties of properly calculating the probability that a random individual's profile would "match" that of the evidence as well as the proper way to intrepret the result. In addition to the technical issues, several authors tell about their experiences in court. A few have become disenchanted with their involvement and describe the events that led them to devote less time to this application. Other articles describe the role of statistical evidence in cases concerning discrimination against minorities, product liability, environmental regulation, the appropriateness and fairness of sentences and how being involved in legal statistics has raised interesting statistical problems requiring further research. The book should be of interest to students, lawyers, and judges with a modest quantitative background as well as statisticians, epidemiologists, geneticists and legal evidence scholars desiring a survey of the area. It informs potential experts about the legal process and introduces them to potential ethical issues they may face. Joseph L. Gastwirth is Professor of Statistics and Economics at George Washington University. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship to support his research on statistical problems arising in the legal setting. He is the author of Statistical Reasoning in Law and Public Policy and over one hundred articles in statistical methodology and its applications.

Description du produit

Most Paladin readers know Ragnar Benson as a survivalist, a powder monkey, a trapper, a hunter and a dispenser of survival medicine, but how many know that he has been involved in the PI business for more than 25 years? In this, his first book on the subject of investigations, Ragnar offers readers two books in one. He reveals how PIs, cops and military interrogators conduct interviews, investigations and interrogations, and he also shows prospective witnesses how to survive them. For investigators, he shares his professional secrets and real-life scenarios for creating effective pretexts for any situation, opening up a witness and keeping him talking, recognizing and "listening" to nonverbal clues, and deciding whether to use honey or vinegar to get the desired results. Then he turns the tables on his fellow investigators and gives potential witnesses specific tips for avoiding - or at least surviving - the tactics, techniques and tricks favored by skilled investigators. Whether you want to be an investigator or avoid one, you won't want to miss this book.

Description du produit

The taphonomic approach within paleontology, archaeology, and paleoanthropology continues to produce advances in understanding postmortem biochemical and morphological transformations. Conversely, advances in understanding the early and intermediate postmortem period generated in the forensic realm can and should be brought to the attention of scientists who study the historic and prehistoric past. Building on the success of Forensic Taphonomy: The Postmortem Fate of Human Remains, Advances in Forensic Taphonomy: Method, Theory, and Archaeological Perspectives presents new and updated techniques. It expands the taphonomic focus on biogeographic context and microenvironments and integrates further the theoretical and methodological links with archaeology and paleontology.Topics covered include:oMicroenvironmental variation and decomposition in different environmentsoTaphonomic interpretation of water deathsoMass graves, mass fatalities and war crimes, archaeological and forensic approachesoUpdates in geochemical and entomological analysisoInterpretation of burned human remainsoDiscrimination of trauma from postmortem changeoTaphonomic applications at the scene and in the labThis comprehensive text takes an interdisciplinary and international approach to understanding taphonomic modifications. Liberally illustrated with photographs, maps, and other images, Advances in Forensic Taphonomy: Method, Theory, and Archaeological Perspectives is a valuable source of information for postmortem death investigation.

Description du produit

Nowhere is there another lab like Dr. Bill Bass's: On a hillside in Tennessee, human bodies decompose in the open air, aided by insects, bacteria and birds, unhindered by coffins or mausoleums. At the "Body Farm," nature takes its course, with corpses buried in shallow graves, submerged in water, concealed beneath slabs of concrete, locked in trunks of cars. As stand-ins for murder victims, they serve the needs of science -- and the cause of justice. For thirty years, Dr. Bass's research has revolutionized the field of forensic science, particularly by pinpointing "time since death" in murder cases. In this riveting audiobook, he investigates real cases and leads listeners on an unprecedented journey behind the locked gates of the Body Farm. A master scientist and an engaging storyteller, Bass shares his most intriguing work: his revisit of the Lindbergh kidnapping and murder, fifty years after the fact; the mystery of a headless corpse whose identity astonished the police; the telltale bugs that finally sent a murderous grandfather to death row; and many more. Forensic science and murder investigations are among the most fascinating topics of our time. Dominating television and print media the subjects could not be hotter. As one of the world's leading forensic anthropologists, Dr. Bill Bass is the premier guide to this unusual realm.

Description du produit

A startling look at how breakthroughs in DNA testing are having a tumultuous impact on criminal investigations. From O. J. Simpson's "trial of the century" to the recent disappearance of Chandra Levy and the reopening of the Edward De Salvo case, the collection and use of DNA in criminal investigations has become a controversial and often confusing burden of proof. Blood Evidence explains the principles and science behind DNA testing and shows how it has both helped solve some of the most puzzling criminal cases in recent history and been used to discredit eyewitness accounts and physical evidence found at the crime scene. Written specifically for a lay audience, Blood Evidence is the first trade book to explore the complexities of DNA testing and the effect it has had on justice systems worldwide.

Description du produit

Their names are splashed all over the newspapers: Marion True, Robert Hecht, Giacomo Medici. The Medici Conspiracy tells the complete history behind the headlines. The story begins with a botched robbery and a police chase. Eight ancient vases are discovered in the swimming pool of a German-based art smuggler. More valuable than the recovery of the vases, however, is the discovery of the smuggler's card index detailing his deals and dealers. It reveals the existence of a web of tomb raiders who steal classical artifacts, and a network of dealers and smugglers who spirit them out of Italy and into the hands of wealthy collectors and museums, including Sothebys, the Getty Museum in L.A., the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Now with a new chapter on the Greek scandal and fallout, The Medici Conspiracy authoritatively exposes another shameful round in one of the oldest games in the world: theft, smuggling and duplicitous dealing, all in the name of art.
